The Friday Dispatch.
Friday mornings, when we've got something to say. The week's best writing, the newest video, and three links we couldn't stop thinking about. We skip the empty weeks on purpose. No sponsors. No filler.

The case against the smart ring
Friends —
I've had the Oura Ring 4 on my finger for 31 days. It's a beautiful object. It has also, I think, made me worse at sleeping.
Not because it's doing anything wrong — the tracking seems fine, the app is tasteful — but because I am now doing something wrong. I'm checking a number in the morning before I've decided how I feel. I'm modeling my own body through a three-ring chart. I'm taking a piece of gear designed to make me more attuned to myself and using it to go a little further outside of myself.
This week:
- A new essay on why local-first software is having a moment
- Our most technical video yet: a Framework Laptop 16 teardown
- Three links: a Craig Mod walk, a Robin Rendle post, and a very good 404 page
